In Singapore, a high-profile case recently ended with a former Indian-origin transport minister, S Iswaran, being sentenced to one year in jail for corruption. This has shocked many, as Iswaran was once a respected figure in Singapore’s government.

It all started when Iswaran was caught up in a corruption case where he faced five serious charges. These included not only taking bribes but also blocking justice. What’s interesting is that the prosecution initially asked for a lighter punishment—about six to seven months in prison. But the judge, Justice Vincent Hoong, thought this wasn’t enough, saying it was “manifestly inadequate.” In the end, Iswaran got a full year behind bars.
