Описание к видео Inside the Cathedral of Mallorca, Spain

🔊🎶 The Catedral de #Mallorca (@catedralmca) is arguably the most famous structure in the #BalearicIslands, and on the roster of most impressive buildings across all of Spain. With its grand, sandstone appearance, “La Seu” (as it is also called) looks like a giant sand castle from afar, but upon closer inspection, can be colorful as sunlight passes through stained glass windows to cast hues within.

With the second highest nave in the country, the #Gothic #basilica is a Mallorcan icon, which is why it was so off-putting that a tour of the interior was not originally on our agenda. However, strings were pulled and we found ourselves inside to marvel at its grandeur—and its history.

Originally founded in the 13th-century under King Jaume I, the #cathedral took centuries to complete before it fell into disrepair. However, the 19th century called for a decades-long renovation that seemed would never end. In 1901, famed Spanish architect Antoni #Gaudi was brought in to work his #Modernist magic and finish the job. He removed central altar pieces that obstructed views, added lighting and the stained glass, moved the choir, and added a baldachin canopy above the altar—just like at his famous La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. However, his liberal, avant garde style was often misunderstood and controversial, and he continually argued with his boss. Eventually Gaudí walked off the job.

Palma Cathedral has endured regardless, and has continued the act of hiring avant garde talent. Enter contemporary artist Miguel Barcelo, who completed an #art installation in 2006 on the right side of the main altar. Like Gaudí before him, he was controversial and misunderstood, using fish head sculptures, skulls, and other usual elements to depict Jesus’ fish and bread miracle.

We admired the work before touring the little museum on the left of the altar, which houses relics of Jesus’ cross, amongst other religious artifacts. — Touring the #CatedralDeMallorca is going “off tour” when it was never a part of the original itinerary, in #PalmaDeMallorca, Mallorca, #Spain / #España. 🇪🇸
