How to Diagnose Codes P2096 and P2098 Fuel Mixture
Engine Running Lean Code Diagnostic P2096
Do It Yourself Diagnose Engine Air Fuel Mixture

Today, the codes I’ll be talking about are P2096 and P2098.
If you haven’t stopped by a store for a free O’Reilly Veriscan diagnostic test, it’s a simple way to get a full readout and recommendations that could help with diagnosis and repair.
Technically speaking, OBD-II fault code P2096 means the “Post Catalyst Fuel Trim System is Too Lean” in bank 1.
Code P2098 indicates the same issue, but for bank 2.
Bank 1 and bank 2 are just names indicating the banks of cylinders and corresponding components on either side of a V-type engine, with bank 1 being the side that contains cylinder 1, and bank 2 indicating the opposite side. In four-cylinder or straight-six engines, there will not be a bank 2, since there are not two sides to the engine itself.
In practical terms, when you see P2096 or P2098, it means the powertrain control module in your vehicle is receiving information that indicates your engine’s exhaust contains too much air in the exhaust system downstream, or after, it passes through your catalytic converter. Having too much air in the fuel mixture and exhaust is referred to as running lean.
P2096 and P2098 can come as a result of engine vacuum or exhaust leaks; a faulty catalytic converter, mass airflow or MAF sensor or oxygen sensor; issues with wiring, wiring connectors, or fuel delivery; or in rare cases, a control module issue.
Besides a Check Engine light, you might also notice poor engine performance, decreased fuel economy, and possibly a rotten egg smell that occurs when a catalytic converter is clogged or damaged.
Whether you notice any symptoms or not, it is recommended that you have the problem diagnosed and repaired as soon as possible.
Your vehicle may still run, but driving has the potential to make the problem worse or cause damage to other systems.
Since the cause and most likely fix for these codes can vary from one vehicle to the next, we recommend starting with an O’Reilly VeriScan report.
We also have additional resources in our How-To Hub to help you diagnose some of these common symptoms.
