NASA and its partners around the world are launching a new space watcher — Sentinel-6B — a satellite built to keep a close eye on Earth’s oceans. From far above the planet, it will track how the sea is rising and shifting across nearly the entire globe. This information helps us see the future more clearly: stronger storm warnings, safer coastlines, protected cities, and smoother global trade routes that cross the oceans every day.

Sentinel-6B is not starting from zero. It joins a powerful legacy that began in 1992 — a chain of satellites that together tell a 30-year story of rising seas. As the twin of Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich, launched in 2020, Sentinel-6B will carry the mission forward, measuring tiny changes in ocean height — down to about an inch — across almost all of Earth’s oceans. Piece by piece, it helps humanity understand how fast the seas are changing, and what that means for life on land.
