Did you know that Mauritius island was once a dense forest, with 2000ha of mangrove along the coastline, a healthy lagoon and coral reef full of unique marine creatures?

However, today, only about 181 hectares of mangroves remain, most of them fragmented into tiny patches.

Mangrove forests in Mauritius are composed of two different species . They are incredibly important ecosystems that many animal species rely on.

They help to fight against the effects of climate change by storing up to five times as much carbon as tropical forests.

Fortunately, mangroves are now protected by law and since the 1980s, more than 100ha have been planted around Mauritius.

To continue the efforts undertaken, you can help and :

participate in mangrove restoration programmes.
Safeguard mangroves instead of cutting them.
-recycle your waste and don’t litter.

Always remember: More mangroves mean more fish and biodiversity, a better livelihood for coastal communities, mitigated impacts of climate change and an improved marine environment.
