Work stress is real, life overwhelm is real. And although we may not live in a society that places and importance on mental health - it does matter. The great resignation has started as people are waking up to these truths - questioning for the first time if they need to continue prioritizing a company over themselves. High cost of living, income inequality, a tumultuous economy, an unreliable government and an uncertain future, however makes exiting or changing a job (as unhealthy as it might be) difficult. No choice is without sacrifice, so what do we do as individuals to cope?

How have we gotten to this stage as a culture where we so sadly forget to acknowledge the sacredness of the negative space in our days? We must remember what is vital to our vitality, to our inner peace, to our unity. Reprieve from the rise and grind mentality is more than a cute idea, it’s necessity. And yet, don’t we all just feel so stuck on this treadmill, because bills don’t pay themselves and will power doesn’t grow on trees. Will the powers at be ever see how much persistence mere subsistence takes for all the little ones beneath?
This fucking system is fucked. And so we do, what? When the world is designed not for health but for profit and people are placed as pawns on a chessboard, just to knock off of it. But the trouble is, we aren’t inanimate objects and heck, even robots need to be recharged to address their energy deficit.
Unfortunately if you don’t have a fortune, you don’t need a fortune teller to tell you, it’s going to be rough. Unless we rewrite the script. Unless we edit the rules. Unless we change the metric by which we measure our rulers. Because as it is those on top are spinning too many lies to get over about time some things topple over.
Employment can surely provide enjoyment, sodality, and a structure that so many of us badly need. But don’t you see? These elements would have been inherent in our natural tribal communities. Somehow in constructing these modern days, we’ve stripped down our essential wild ways of existing and replaced them with rubble, stacked in just the right way to resemble living. But I’m telling you it’s not sturdy, bound to crumble you. You feel it in the jobs that are painful, whether for content or hours spent, it’s draining, so you’re not full. And the real you stays back so the remaining is left asking, how far does my body have to commute from my being to be here? Ceaselessly compromised and in fear.
Out here on this planet, with all its inhabitants, things are a mess, and salutary change on a global scale well, it isn’t impossible but it also isn’t for the impatient. So what do we do in the meantime? I know there’s a path out, but what direction is actually viable and what direction in my head is solely romanticized?
We do have to watch ourselves and not be naive. Life will never be without trials and misery. But let’s not let it be at the hands of our own humanity, who’ve for too long allowed institutions that are diseased. So the fact that you feel sick, stifled, stuck or about to crack, this isn’t an accident. There are parts of you seeking the light, like a seed bursting it’s tightly curled leaf out its shell, vulnerable and strong. Or, like a whale down deep, singing its songs beneath, but just as the bubbles glide, guided to breach. The divine dwells inside with the same needs. These are the messages crucial to keep and hear and honor and preach. These are the messages that we need to transform into form through speech and visual art and drama performance. Through craft, no matter how abstract, and music and dance. For this how we heal. This is how we process the chaos and find answers to questions that hold us captive.
That’s my prayer for you today, that you’ll see spacious moments that sprout up with their potential not always for “productivity,” but perhaps for pondering, perhaps for putting pencil to paper, perhaps for simply staying with the silence. Take these times as your duty to do the real work, to purge the hurt, to listen for how you can be of service, to cultivate your voice, whether vocal or another art form - I promise you, you have a contribution all your own.
As a society we don’t yet have every solution but we can get closer and closer by having a conversation. Together we are the future’s composer. Here’s the crux though, we can only converse if we each have a voice first. And it’s going to take us all to sit down and figure out this puzzle but that’s also the value in exercising our listening muscles. So, what we do on our downtime to give the divine attention is the same respect we ought to direct to each other, in order know our sisters & brothers, to the core, under all the labels. This is the foundation of true collaboration. It’s what makes room for everyone at the table to do the work because we don’t yet have every solution, but we will get closer and closer.
