Yo Goto (b. 1958) is recognized as one of the leading composers and educators in the field of wind and percussion music in the United States and Japan. Goto received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Yamagata University, Japan, and studied composition with Shin-ichiro Ikebe at Tokyo College of Music, completing a Performance Diploma Course. As active composer, arranger, and clinician, Goto moved to Texas to study composition with Cindy McTee at University of North Texas (UNT) in 2001. He holds a Master of Music degree in composition and a Master of Music Education degree from UNT. His work, Songs for Wind Ensemble, won the 2011 Sousa/Ostwald Award held by the American Bandmasters Association.
A War in Wonderland, a suite for euphonium solo, was commissioned by Mai Kokubo, and premiered at her recital in Tokyo on January 24, 20 14. As the title suggests, this suite is a caricature of old-fashioned war; therefore, the euphonium often imitates the sound of the bugles and drums especially in the first movement. The second movement represents a fictitious princess as a victim of the war. In this movement, court music and bugle calls are irrelevantly inserted as if a princess sees a phantom. The bugles and drums call again at the battlefield in the third movement, and an easy march is finally transformed to funeral music at the end.

2014年1月に東京で開催された小久保まいさんのリサイタルのために作曲された、無伴奏ユーフォニアムのためのこの組曲は、戦争の戯画です。ここでは古い軍楽や宮廷音楽のスタイルが借用され、ユーフォニアム奏者はひとりで何役も――ラッバや太鼓や敵や味方や兵士やお姫様を一演じることになります。第1楽章〈ラッパと太鼓〉は、タイトルどおり軍楽のパロディですが、信号ラッパとドラム・マーチは最後までかみ合わずに進行していきます。おそらく敵同士なのでしょう。〈囚われの姫君〉と題された第2楽章は、無伴奏チェロの音楽のスタイル。あまり出来のよくないメヌエットや、調子外れのラッパがどこからか聴こえてきます。お姫様の幻聴かもしれません。第3楽章〈戦場一葬送〉は、再び軍楽のパロディ。それまで出てきた音楽的な素材による自由な展開部になっています。途中で現われた間抜けな行進曲は、最後は葬送の行進曲に姿を変えます。(後藤洋)
