Effective, reliable communication is essential for emergency preparedness, especially in the North Pacific where remote islands face unique challenges in disaster response due to vast ocean distances and limited infrastructure. In September 2024, our team traveled to Mejatto in RMI to install a new radio base station, traveling nearly ten hours on a ship from Ebeye, the nearest commercial center. The project included setting up HF and VHF radios and solar panels, and distributing handheld radios, enabling Mejatto residents to directly receive early warnings from the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and communicate with neighboring islands. Our team also trained local operators and facilitated community drills to ensure communities are ready to act in the event of an emergency. This initiative, implemented under the leadership of NDMO, and supported through the World Bank, now connects 26 atolls and islands, strengthening disaster preparedness in the Marshall Islands.
