The son of the Deputy Prime Minister of the EAO Maria Kostyuk, Andrei Kovtun, died in the Donetsk region, he posthumously received the star of the Hero of Russia, the regional government reported:

“The feat of Andrei Nikolaevich Kovtun will never be forgotten. When a group of motorized riflemen was ambushed, it was he who received their signal and decided to advance to the aid of his comrades. In the conditions of superior enemy forces, Andrey Nikolayevich personally destroyed three units of enemy equipment, several dozen Ukrainian Nazi soldiers.

He closed the direction of fire with his BMP, the combat vehicle was hit, but the senior lieutenant led the operation until the last moment and was able to ensure the evacuation of the personnel of the reconnaissance group from under enemy fire. In this battle, Senior Lieutenant Andrey Kovtun received multiple shrapnel wounds, which became fatal. But thanks to this feat, his comrades-in-arms remained alive and were able to continue performing combat missions.

Andrei Kovtun was 26 years old, he died in August near the village of Spornoye, Vzglyad wrote. “'Children of officials don't go to war', 'Children of officials don't die in the Northern Military District'... I've read and continue to read all of this. Not angry. Already - I'm not angry, - his mother told the newspaper. - He did his job. And he did it well. Thanks to Andrew, people are alive. I know them, and I know about them."
