The famous photos of the Eiffel Tower going up stage by stage are an invaluable record of how one aspect of Paris changed over a period of time, but how has the rest of the cityscape moved on over the past 150 years? These "then" and "now" photos compare old studies of the city with their present-day equivalents, each pair on a double spread page. The Arc de Triomphe has lost its triumphant bronze equestrian group crowning the Arch, though it now houses the body of an unknown soldier from World War I, while the Louvre has lost the Tuileries Palace and gained the Pyramid. The elegant 17th century Place des Vosges, one of Paris's premier addresses, seems almost completely unchanged in its aloof splendour. The Rue de Lyon, on the other hand, is pictured during the floods of 1910 with sober-suited businessmen being punted to safety, in strong contrast with today's bustling shopping area. The famous, or infamous, Moulin Rouge still has the same jaunty Windmill tower as in the 1880s, but the Moulin de Galette disappeared in the 1920s as the bohemian élite such as the Dadaist Tristan Tsara built their modernist villas in the area. Montmartre's hilltop, the Butte, was the scene of the beginning of the Paris commune in 1871 and an amazing photo shows 171 cannons lined up.
