Exploring The Abandoned Cwmorthin Slate Quarry

Описание к видео Exploring The Abandoned Cwmorthin Slate Quarry

We pick up on our explore up the abandoned disused Cwmorthin Quarry. In the last video, we looked at the tramway that was used to transport the slate from the quarry to the Ffestiniog Railway below and onwards to Porthmadog.

Quarrying on the site started in 1810. In 1860 it was connected to the Ffestiniog Railway. In 1900 it was acquired by the nearby Oakeley quarry and the two were connected underground. In 1970 it closed along with Oakeley. There was small-scale working in the 1980s and 1990s, and the mine finally closed in 1997.

Starting at the lower mill, or London Hall as it was also known. We cross the old bridge into the ruins.
Further up the quarry, we can see a derelict shell of a row of houses - Cwmorthin Terrace overlooking Llyn Cwmorthin. So much to see with old buildings and outcrops littered around the site. We can also find the remains of Cwmorthin cottage.

On your way up or down, keep an eye on for the Cwmorthin Waterfalls.
