The new BMW X3 offers a diverse portfolio of powertrains, incorporating the latest generation of highly efficient internal combustion engines from the BMW Group’s modular lineup. Also included is a plug-in hybrid system utilizing the latest BMW eDrive technology. Leading the range is the BMW X3 M50 xDrive, an M Performance model that surpasses its competitors in dynamic performance. This version combines a six-cylinder in-line petrol engine with 48V mild hybrid technology. The same 48V system is featured in the four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines of the BMW X3 20 xDrive and BMW X3 20d xDrive, both available at launch. The plug-in hybrid BMW X3 30e xDrive, meanwhile, delivers an extended electric range of 81 to 90 kilometres (50 to 56 miles) based on the WLTP cycle, allowing for zero tailpipe emissions well beyond urban environments.
The BMW X3 M Sport 20d Steptronic xDrive is priced in Europe at €61,600 and €65,230 for the M versions, compared to the standard configuration's cost of €57,900. In the United States, pricing for the new BMW X3 starts at $51,125 and can go up to $65,875 depending on selected trims and options.
Alongside the updated powertrain lineup comes a revision in model naming. The new petrol-powered models will carry the badges BMW X3 20 xDrive and BMW X3 M50 xDrive, dropping the “i” that previously denoted petrol injection. Moving forward, the “i” designation will be reserved for all-electric BMW models only. Diesel variants will retain the “d” in their names, preceded by a two-digit number indicating power output—such as in the BMW X3 20d xDrive. The letter “e” in BMW X3 30e xDrive continues to signify the integration of BMW eDrive technology in its plug-in hybrid setup.
Every new BMW X3 variant benefits from electrification, ensuring improved power delivery and efficiency via 48V mild hybrid systems. Two distinct types of these systems are utilized. In the BMW X3 20d xDrive’s four-cylinder diesel unit, the mild hybrid tech includes a belt-driven starter generator offering a boost of 8 kW/11 hp and 25 Nm (18 lb-ft) of torque. For the petrol-powered BMW X3 M50 xDrive and BMW X3 20 xDrive, the system incorporates an electric motor functioning as a crankshaft-mounted starter generator. Together with power electronics, this motor is built into the eight-speed Steptronic transmission housing. It delivers up to 13 kW/18 hp and 200 Nm (147 lb-ft) of torque depending on driving conditions. In petrol models, this setup also enables short-distance, low-speed electric-only driving—ideal for parking and maneuvering.
The BMW X3 20d xDrive’s four-cylinder diesel engine is now both more powerful and more efficient. Beyond its mild hybrid setup, the engine features a lightweight crankcase, tempered steel low-friction pistons with graphite-coated skirts, and an actively controlled oil separator with an electric drive. Updates have also been made to the 2.0-litre engine’s BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, including enhancements to the two-stage turbocharging system, common-rail injection, and exhaust gas recirculation to reduce fuel use and emissions.
This engine delivers a peak output of 145 kW/197 hp and maximum torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft), allowing the BMW X3 20d xDrive to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 7.7 seconds.
Customers can select from various wheel sizes and styles. Standard wheels are 18 inches for the BMW X3 20 xDrive and BMW X3 20d xDrive, 19 inches for the BMW X3 30e xDrive, and 20 inches for the BMW X3 M50 xDrive. Optional extras include a broad range of wheel designs and finishes. The new BMW X3 is also available with wider 20-inch and 21-inch light-alloy wheels, which enhance dynamic handling and improve ride comfort while boosting visual impact. Additionally, 20-inch sport tyres can be selected to further improve lateral grip, traction, and braking performance.
