Dr. AK Rairu Gopal, fondly known as Kannur’s Two-Rupees Doctor, became a symbol of hope in a time when healthcare was increasingly commercialized. For over five decades, he stood unwaveringly by the side of the poor, working class, and marginalized, offering medical consultations for just ₹2—later raised slightly—while often providing medicines free of cost to those in financial distress.
Driven by an unshakable sense of duty and empathy, Dr. Rairu Gopal began seeing patients from as early as 4 a.m., continuing until 4 p.m., later adjusting his timings to 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. At the height of his practice, he was known to treat over 300 patients a day, offering not just medical care but also dignity and reassurance to those who had nowhere else to turn.
Even as he grew older, he remained committed to his mission, continuing his consultations until 2024. It was only then, due to health concerns, that he finally hung a notice outside his home in Thana, Kannur, informing patients that he could no longer see them. In his final days, he humbly reflected that he had treated over 18 lakh patients during his lifetime.
This great human being passed away on 2nd August 2025 due to age-related illness, leaving behind not just memories, but a powerful message: that medicine is not merely a profession, but a calling.
May his life inspire doctors and the community alike to uphold the values of service, humility, and compassion, reminding us all that true greatness lies in giving—quietly, consistently, and wholeheartedly.
