Before I head out for my summer adventure, let’s go on another hike. This time I take you along to the high plateau Greina.

The weather is not ideal for a 2-day hike but I have friends from Finland visiting so we take the call and head up despite some rain in the forecast. That being said, you have to be very careful with the weather in the Alps as things can change quickly in the mountains. So be prepared and stay informed.

We leave Sogn Giusep behind us and ascend to Puzzatsch. The path winds its way past the alpine stables of the Tegia Sut up to the Diesrut Pass.

Shortly after the top of the pass, the view should open up to the wide plain of the Greina with the meandering river. However, we see 50 shades of grey. The Greina Plateau lies between the cantons of Graubünden and Ticino. It is six kilometers (3.7 miles) long and one kilometer (0.6 miles) wide, even as early as the Roman era, important routes across the Alps led through this region. The plateau has remained an untouched jewel because it is still only reached on foot, is a unique Alpine tundra landscape at an elevation of 2,200 meters (7218 feet). Four huts are available for overnight stays, we head to the Terri Hut.

After descending into the plain, the hiking trail leads over the suspension bridge over the Rein da Sumvitg. During the last hour the rain gets pretty intense. There is no footage of us crossing the 65-meter-long (213 feet) and 40-meter-high (131 feet) bridge which apparently is one of the highlights of this hike. Not being a big fan of heights and with my feet swimming in my hiking boots, I focus on the path leading on to the Terri Hut. My friends, being true Finns activate their sisu state and are not bothered by the weather. Sisu generally refers to a state of mind characterized by determination, perseverance, and resilience, particularly in the face of adversity.

Nevertheless, we are all pretty happy to reach the hut, change into dry clothes and enjoy the afternoon and evening. The peace and calm of the hut without any cell phone reception is an exceptional experience. People chat with each other, play games or read. In the evening a delicious 4-course dinner is served. We have such a good time in the cozy hut and enjoy each other’s company.

After breakfast we leave our shelter and head towards the Crest la Greina. The weather doesn’t present itself much better than the previous day but we catch a dry period for our descent. We are rewarded with a beautiful, very varied landscape. At several rocky passages, the path is secured with chains. We spot Alpine salamanders as well as two families of eagles. What an experience!

Once at the bottom of the valley, the path follows the Rein da Sumvitg. We continue to Runcahez, where we get a pick-up from the bus alpin. It is here that our beautiful, mystical hike concludes. Thank you to my hiking buddies, kiitos #vuorimuumit.
