Something a little different for this adventure. Instead of the Lake District I am in the south of the Snowdonia National Park. The exact start location is the small hamlet of Tal-y-Llyn, about half way between the towns of Dolgellau and Machynlleth. We were staying in a holiday cottage which is actually the small 13th century church there which has been partly converted. Below is a link to the cottage on the Sykes website.

The route is not one of the main ways to the summit of Cadair Idris although it does join the main Minffordd Path further in to the walk. However because of this you are pretty much guaranteed a lovely quiet walk for the most part.

If you are there for the day then the parking at the start of the walk (SH 710 094) by the Pen-y-bont Hotel is £5.
From here its a short walk up the road until you see a sign for the bridleway to the left. After a short but steep pull up through the woods you turn right on to the farm track. On reaching the farm, whilst the OS map does have the public footpath going through the farm, you can't go this way so stick to the path below the farm. Over a ladder stile and then a few yards later a normal stile and you are on the farm track again. Follow this up the hill over a couple more stiles until you reach a gate. Turn right here and head up the faint path up Graig Dhu.

On reaching a rusty gate (SH 709 106) go through this and follow the quad bike track all the way up to the ladder stile on Craig Cwm Amarch (SH 705 117). You can take the path either side of the stile but my advice would be to stick to the right for the best views down in to Cwm Amarch below. It is also here where you get the first siting of the summit of Cadair Idris.

Keep following the path on to Craig Cau, and it is here you get the first beautiful views of Llyn Cau

All that remains from here is to follow the short but very distinct rocky path up to the summit of Cadair Idris (Penygadair). If you are lucky like I was with the weather the views are spectacular in every direction. You can see into the mountains in all directions and also out to Cardigan Bay and the Irish Sea.

After spending about half an hour on the summit I headed back down the way I came. This route is a straight forward, out and back and took me around 4 hours 40 mins to do the 8.3 mile which included a 25 minute break at the summit.
