Please note, if the disc isn't reading because it's too scratched, this method probably won't work - nothing will fix an overly scratched disc.

In this short video we'll show you how you can get games to work after getting the 'disc read error' message on the PlayStation 2.
The game we used to demonstrate in this video is EA Games' Theme Park World (2000). As you'll see in this video, this 23 year old game that had previously not worked, is now loading and playable!
The disc is a Compact Disc, and a common issue with the old PS2 consoles is that the Compact Disc laser stops working.
When you're trying to get your old discs to work, it's worth checking first if they're a DVD or a Compact Disc. If you didn't already know, the PlayStation 2 has 2 lasers - one for DVDs and one for Compact Discs. The games released for the PS2 were both Compact Disc and DVD. If this method really doesn't work for you, it may be that the Compact Disc laser in your PS2 is out of alignment.

Here are the steps in this video (with timestamps):
00:00 Step 1: Turn on your PS2 console without a disc inside.
00:26 Step 2: Press the Triangle button on 'System Configuration' for the Version settings.
Go up to 'Console' and select 'Options'.
Turn Diagnosis On.
00:35 Step 3: Exit out of settings. Put the disc in.
00:49 Step 4: Now wait until you get the 'Disc Read Error'.
This can take a while, so be patient. It took around 5 minutes for me.
01:01 Step 5: With the disc still in the console, press the 'Reset' button on the PS2.
Sometimes it will work first time and load straight into the game from here. If not, it will take you to home screen, so continue to next steps...
The fix doesn't always work the first time. So to try again...
01:31 Step 6: Turn Diagnosis back on. (It automatically turns itself off every time you reset the PS2).
This time don't reset, just wait for a little while...
Using this method I've been able to get "unreadable" discs to work most of the time!
