Outside their den on the shortgrass prairie a litter of swift fox kits play and forage as their mother remains alert for threats.

Each monogamous swift fox pair will produce only one litter each year, but may occupy several dens during that time. Dens are typically abandoned due to prey scarcity or prevalence of skin parasites that accumulate in the burrow. Pups are born during springtime, but do not emerge for about a month, after which they remain with the parents until fall. Social organization in the swift foxes is based on female territorial dominance, with males emigrating if females are killed or removed.
