Moving on from Mistakes, Failure, and Regret

Leadership coach Joe Scherrer talks about learning to move on from mistakes in leadership and looking at regret in a healthy way.

You know when I look back on my leadership career especially early on but even later on I have lots of what I call cringe-worthy moments. Moments where I look back and say, “What was I thinking?”

Early on it was very headstrong, I didn't really like to listen to a whole lot of input, and I made some decisions that were that were pretty bad and that impacted people in a negative way. I had these blind spots early on that I would I thought I was right, and it was my way or the highway.

But over time through the school of hard knocks I learned to move on.

So learning to move on is one way of handling regret.

The other thing is I have personally have a tendency to try to block out those painful memories, but now what I do is I just let them wash over me.

I don't dwell on them but those feelings those sensations those memories all remind me of where I was and also remind me that I don't want to go back to the person I was or to make those same types of decisions.

So I look at those regrets in a healthy way and as helps for me to move forward and become a better leader and a better person because of it.
