David Brisbin, MDiv/LPPC is teaching pastor at theeffect faith community and recovery ministry in San Juan Capistrano, CA. He is also executive director of Encompass Recovery, an addiction treatment center. His twenty five year study of the Hebrew roots of Jesus and Christianity led to his ground-level approach to both spiritual formation and substance abuse recovery, processes he sees as one and the same from a practical and contemplative point of view. In addition to guiding people directly at theeffect and remotely through distance learning. His first book, "The Fifth Way" is available online along with several audio series and hundreds of podcasts.

Dave Brisbin's relatively rare stance as a pastor working within a Christian framework is the combination of viewing Jesus as a first-century Jewish mystic, and living and promoting contemplative spirituality. Understanding Jesus’ message through the Hebrew/Aramaic language and idiomatic expressions, worldview, and historical context is to see the concrete, practical, and contemplative nature of his teaching as opposed to more abstract theology. Putting that contemplative spirituality into practice emphasizes a non-intellectual (not anti-intellectual) approach to spirituality where a cultivated experience of being — apart from the egoic thought-stream — is valued as the purest form of prayer and path to a sense of identity, meaning, purpose. Freeing Jesus’ message from Western Christian theological, ritual, and often superstitious confines makes Jesus newly relevant and accessible to people who could otherwise not accept the religious implications associated with him and help them engage the original Way Jesus taught as the only Way to find the real connection and relationship with each other and God that is our true identity, meaning, and purpose.
