Melbourne radio giant Neil Mitchell has farewelled listeners after 34 years of hosting his morning program.

The talkback titan has occupied the 8.30am to midday timeslot on 3AW since 1990.

When he announced his departure in September, he described it as a difficult decision.

Despite being known for his agenda-setting interviews and sharp political analysis, Mr Mitchell has remained humble, describing himself as 'nothing more than a bloke with a microphone'.

He dedicated the last half hour of his show to taking calls to thank listeners for their loyalty
