This BR Standard Class 2-8-2 steam locomotive is the locomotive that British Railways DID NOT build in preference for the British Railways 9F 2-10-0. Steam test and first Day of running at Worthing Model Engineering Club for this new locomotive.
This is the third locomotive within a month to be completed at Worthing Model Engineering Club and have its first run on the track. It is pure coincidence that they all finished together as they all took very different times to complete. This video is the third video in the series that shows the completion of the final one of this trio of magnificent locomotives. This video also clearly portrays a vibrant and active club that is a strong local social asset as well as being a formidable model engineering society.
The wheel arrangement name "Mikado" originated from a group of Japanese type 9700 2-8-2 locomotives that were built by Baldwin Locomotive Works for the 3 ft 6 in (1,067 mm) gauge Nippon Railway of Japan in 1897.
The original proposal for this Class 9 heavy freight was for a “Mikado” 2-8-2. This design used the “Britannia” boiler and five foot driving wheels giving increased speed over existing Class 8 2-8-0 designs.
R. A. Riddles, Chief Mechanical Engineer of British Railways, however, preferred the far better adhesion of a 2-10-0 wheel arrangement with a wide firebox. The BR 9F 2-10-0 was the result although this was eventually found to require its own new boiler design.
