One of Bengaluru’s most iconic restaurants for traditional South Indian breakfast and meals, Mavalli Tiffin Rooms or MTR is a culinary institution.

Nearly 100 years old, located in a quaint double-storey building with halls packed full of patrons, both old and new, Mavalli Tiffin Rooms, Lalbagh is part of the history of Bengaluru.

The eatery today is known for its rich culinary traditions, that has struck a chord with people not just in the country, but across the world!

Fresh, crunchy salad. Typically to be eaten at the start of the meal.

Raw banana palya/ balekai palya
tasty fibre. coconut adds a nice texture. made with a south canara masala, that is very gentle. Looks spicy but isn’t!

Poori Sagu
Fluffy pooris best eaten with the sweet and tangy saagu and thick chutney. the savoury and slight sweetness from the potatoes are balanced with the spice hit from the chutney.

Sabbakki kadle bele payasam
Perfectly sweet dessert. has some chana dal that adds texture and breaks the gluten and the sweetness. helps you refresh your palate in between all the food.

Mini masala dosa
dosa has a slight tartness from the batter. can taste the masala in every bite. the chutney adds flavour and spice. the slightly grainy bite of fried gram in the chutney makes it the perfect accompaniment to the dosa.

Rave vade
a delicious, crunchy fritter. this accompaniment on the thali is different everyday.

Bisibelebath
a flavourful bisibelebath. the bite of the vegetables is what makes this dish. it is robustly spiced. Best eaten with the raita.

Kara pongal with hunase hannu gojju
A Thursday special. This flavourful dish sings on your palate. the tangy tamarind chutney helps cut through the spice from the ginger and peppercorns in the dish.

White rice and bendekai huli with ghee
typical south Canara Style huli/ sambar. super tasty! Slightly tart in flavour, you can taste the spices and the crunch of the vegetable. Best eaten with ghee to round off all its flavours.

Rice and rasam
piping hot rasam/ saaru! can taste the spices that are well balanced. sourness from tomato and tamarind is balanced with a slight sweetness from the jaggery. The spice comes from the red byadgi chilli. great when eaten with the appala and uppinakayi or pickle.

Curd rice
lightly seasoned. curd rice helps settle your tummy. makes for a lovely end to the rice courses.

Ice cream and fruit mixture
this ice cream, made in house and with very little fat - almost like a rich sorbet - is only available at mtr and is called the american ice cream. served with a ‘french fruit mixture’ as they call it.

Gulab jamoon
Flat, oblong jamoon. Light, not cloyingly sweet, a bit of camphor traditionally added for flavour.

Beeda or pan
Stuffed with fennel, gulkand and betel nut to refresh your mouth. a perfect digestive. rounds up a perfectly satisfying and happy lunch here.
