DPEd (Diploma in Physical Education) is a two-year duration diploma level physical education programme offered at different universities and colleges in India. The course is usually available as a full-time programme, however, some universities also offer part-time/ distance learning DPEd courses to students. DPEd includes physical activities related to body fitness, health and physical development of the body. It involves both the theoretical and practical perspective of Physical education and the entire duration of two years is equally devoted for both practical and theory.
Admission to a DPEd programme is usually provided on the basis of marks obtained in 10+2. The merit list is prepared by university officials and released based on which candidates can opt for the specific university. On completion of the same, they can become athletic trainers, gym instructors, yoga instructors, etc. They can also opt for higher studies like BPEd, MPEd or even PhD. The course primarily focuses on topics related to coaching and training, physical fitness, outdoor activities and other skills required for different types of adventure.
