The salt gland is an important organ for some marine tetrapods, as it helps them maintain the proper hypotonicity in their bodies while living in the ocean. These salt glands are typically located in or around the mouth, nose, or eyes. For example, sea turtles have salt glands in their orbital cavity, which produce "tears" with a higher salt concentration. This makes it appear as if the sea turtle is "crying," which can easily be observed when they are laying eggs on the beach. However, since the tears are almost transparent, they are not usually apparent when the sea turtle is underwater.

This footage shows the salt excretion of an underwater sea turtle. When the hypertonic tears were secreted in the seawater, a visible distortion was created around the boundary of these two different solutions. This phenomenon can be captured by a camera, as seen in the video. Enjoy!
