Ruins imply a variety of concepts, including decay, collapse, pieces, a sense of history, and pastness. But to say something is in ruins implies that it is resilient and persistent; that is, that remnants of what once existed still exist despite time or an absence. Ruins, the latest album from guitarist and composer Corrado Maria de Santis, was published by Midira Records on limited tape and successfully captures at least some of the intricacy in its name. The four tracks on the album each explore different aspects of noise, signal, and decay, utilizing layers of hiss, a rumbling drone, flickering bursts of signal, and acoustic accompaniment to build and release auditory tension.
