The guanaco, one of the largest herbivores in South America, was once abundant and could be found in flat, mountainous, cold, and subtropical areas throughout Argentina.

After the arrival of early Europeans, the persecution of these animals resulted in a significant reduction in individuals and their once-inhabited areas. As a result, the guanaco is almost extinct in the Chaco, Pampean, and Espinal regions.

The El Retorno de Los Nuestros program, implemented by the Government of La Pampa, seeks to return keystone species that are extinct or are about to become extinct back to the province. The reintroduction of the guanaco in Parque Luro is an example.

Santa Cruz has the largest guanaco population in the world, and studies carried out in the northwest of the province indicate that the area can donate wild individuals to restoration projects such as the one in La Pampa.

Through collaboration with Rewilding Argentina, two other provinces are now working to recover the native fauna of our country. The success of the first experimental translocation has encouraged the use of this method in recovering the guanaco — not only in La Pampa but also in other regions where it has disappeared.
