Welcome to ILSA’s Word of the Week! Today’s word is RECIPROCITY.

Reciprocity describes the mutual agreement between two states’ insurance regulators that licensees in one state can apply for a license in the other state without having to complete its pre-licensing requirements or take the state’s licensing examination. Reciprocity also usually exempts licensees from the continuing education requirements in non-resident states.

Fast Fact: Even if you’re licensed in only a few states, you’ll want to follow what’s happening nationwide. When one state adopts a new regulation or procedure – especially if it’s one of the Big Four – other states tend to follow. It’s one of the principles that make reciprocity work.
