Описание к видео Eucomis comosa Sparkling Burgundy, a Pineapple Lily with unusual foliage colour and long blooming

Eucomis comosa Sparkling Burgundy is a beautiful variety of Pineapple Lily, with a very unusual foliage colour, reddish-burgundy, and a bright burgundy flower stem covered by a multitude of star-shaped pink flowers, about 2 cm across, with a light scent reminiscent of honey. Even if commonly called Pineapple Lily due to the fact that the flower stem is topped by a few bracts similar to leaves, reminding vaguely the appearance of a pineapple (the specific Latine name "comosus" means "tufted" and it is actually the same specific name of the Pineapple, Ananas comosus), this plant is only very distantly related to lilies; closer relatives are instead hyacinths, muscari and bluebells, all belonging, like Eucomis, to the subfamily Scilloidaeae in the Asparagus famiy Asparagaceae.
As this variety of Pineapple lily is reddish both on the leaves and on the bracts, the similarity to a pineapple requires a bit of imagination for the red colour; definitely more similar to a pineapple is the green variety of Eucomis comosa, as well as the gorgeous small varieties of Eucomis, such as Aloha Kona and White Dwarf; you can see the latter two varieties on this link    • Very fragrant flower bulbs: the coconut-sc...   .
Eucomis comosa Sparkling Burgundy is a very easy plant to grow: can be bought in spring as a bulb or as a plant, to be planted in well drained soil and full sun, and keeping it moist during the active growth of the plant: the leaves will sprout in spring while the flower stem will develop in summer, blooming usually in mid to late summer. The flowers open sequentially, not all together, providing a source of nectar for pollinators throughout a few weeks. After pollination, the flowers do not fade straight way, but actually appear very similar to the fresh flowers, with the tepals still in place, while developing the seed pod, so the flower stem keeps its ornamental value for several weeks. In autumn the leaves and the flower stem will die down, and the bulb go for dormancy. Even if Eucomis comosa is native to South Africa, it is actually a species that can handle a few degrees below freezing point in winter; indeed you can cultivate this plant outdoors in USDA zone 8 and up, because it is hardy down to minus 10 degrees Celsius, as long it is cultivated in very well drained soil and in full sun. In colder climates, you can either lift the bulb if cultivated in the ground, or, if kept in pots, move the pot in a frost free place for the winter. It is very important to avoid a wet / waterlogged soil when the bulb is dormant. The propagation can be done by offsets, or by seed, however the plants developed from seed will bloom only after several years after germination.
