Allergies in Your Eyes. Itchy and scratchy eyes.
Allergies! With fall allergy season upon us, lets talk about allergies.
Allergies can impact many parts of your body including the lungs, sinuses, throat, skin and of course the eyes.

When the pollen or other offending agent hits your eyes it trigger a release of Histamine (itchy factor) from the mast cells in your eyes. This starts the process of itching, redness, tearing, swelling and, if left unchecked, inflammation.

The good news is there are a lot of treatment options available.
1. Artificial Tears: Flush out the offending agent and the reaction is reduced or eliminated. This is the easiest option but not super effective, but works well in Mild cases.
2. OTC Allergy Drops: These can be very effective. Especially Zaditor, this is the best otc brand of allergy meds. Works very well if used twice daily. A lot of my patients actually only need to use it once and still feel way better.
3. Prescription Allergy Drops: Patanol, Pataday, Pazeo or generic equivalents are super effective even in moderate to severe cases. You want to use these twice daily for 2 weeks since they offer an additive effect! The branded ones are more effective than generics.
4. Allergy Pills: Zyrtec, Allegra or Claritin are good options. The draw back is that it is only mildly effective against eye allergies but can work as a secondary therapy.
5. Anti-Inflammatory Drops: Steroid or NSAID drops always effective but should be reserved for severe cases or those unresponsive to other therapies since these have the highest chance of side effects.
