ST. MARYS, Pa. -- An Elk County man was arrested for allegedly leading police on an hour-long foot chase when they tried to question him about a stabbing that occurred more than a week earlier.

St. Marys police said Wednesday they arrested David J. Charles II, 22, of St. Marys, after he ran from officers for more than an hour Tuesday afternoon.

Police said they were looking to question Charles in a stabbing investigation. An officer saw Charles around 2 p.m. on Ash Street, but after Charles saw officers he ran off. Police said they were able to apprehend him around 3 p.m. on Rock Street.

Charles was charged with resisting arrest and fleeing from police in relation to Tuesday's incident, police said.

Police also charged Charles in the stabbing on June 29. Charles is accused of using a knife to stab Gary Jones, 33, of Ridgway, during an alteration at approximately 3:15 a.m. in the area of Lafayette and Washington streets.

Charles faces aggravated assault, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person in relation to the June 29 incident.

Online court documents showed Charles was being held in the Elk County Prison on $5,000 bail related to the chase and $25,000 bail related to the stabbing.

Officers from the Johnsonburg and Ridgway police departments, the Pennsylvania State Police, the Elk County Sheriff's Office, the Pennsylvania Game Commission and Crystal Fire Department assisted with Charles' apprehension.
