Communis means “common digital extensor.” This is the extensor muscle that all digits have in common. The extensor digitorum communis is a superficial muscle. The lateral epicondyle of the humerus (common extensor origin). Insertion, extensor expansions of the medial four digits. Innervation of the extensor digitorum communis muscle is the posterior interosseous nerve (C7). The extensor digitorum communis extends the medial four digits at the MCP joints and the interphalangeal joints.
