The Services Selection Board (SSB) Interview is a comprehensive assessment to select candidates for officer roles in the Indian Armed Forces. It spans 5 days and evaluates Officer-Like Qualities (OLQs) through psychological, group, and personal tests.
🔹 Day 0: Reporting & Documentation
Candidates report at the SSB center and undergo document verification.
Form filling (PIQ Form – Personal Information Questionnaire).
Introduction to the SSB procedure.
📅 Day 1: Screening Test
The first step filters candidates for the next rounds. It includes:
1️⃣ Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) Test
Verbal & Non-Verbal Reasoning (e.g., number series, analogy, coding-decoding).
50 questions per section, total 2 sets.
2️⃣ Picture Perception and Discussion Test (PPDT)
A blurred image is shown for 30 seconds.
Candidates write a story based on the image in 4 minutes.
Group discussion on the story interpretation.
📌 Result: Selected candidates proceed to Stage 2, others are sent back.
📅 Day 2: Psychological Tests
Assessing the subconscious mind through written responses.
1️⃣ Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)
12 images (last one blank) shown for 30 seconds each.
Candidates write a story in 4 minutes per image.
2️⃣ Word Association Test (WAT)
60 words displayed one by one for 15 seconds each.
Candidates write the first thought that comes to mind.
3️⃣ Situation Reaction Test (SRT)
60 real-life situations given.
Candidates write their response to each scenario in 30 minutes.
4️⃣ Self-Description Test (SDT)
Candidates write their strengths, weaknesses, and personality traits.
Topics: Self, Parents, Teachers, Friends, Own Opinion.
📅 Day 3 & 4: GTO (Group Testing Officer) Tasks
This stage tests teamwork, leadership, and decision-making skills.
🔹 Group Discussion (GD)
Two topics based on current affairs & social issues.
🔹 Group Planning Exercise (GPE)
Given a hypothetical problem, candidates discuss & provide a solution.
🔹 Progressive Group Task (PGT)
Obstacle Course: Use planks, ropes, and structures to cross obstacles.
🔹 Half Group Task (HGT)
Same as PGT, but in smaller groups for individual assessment.
🔹 Individual Obstacles
10 physical tasks to be completed in 3 minutes (e.g., rope climbing, jumping, crawling).
🔹 Command Task
Candidate acts as a leader, solving an obstacle with two subordinates.
🔹 Snake Race (Group Obstacle Race)
Team competition where candidates hold a rope and cross multiple obstacles.
🔹 Lecturette
Candidate speaks on a given topic for 3 minutes.
📅 Day 5: Personal Interview & Conference
🔹 Personal Interview
One-on-one interaction with the Interviewing Officer (IO).
Topics: Personal life, Academics, Current Affairs, Defense knowledge, and OLQs.
Duration: 30–45 minutes.
🔹 SSB Conference
Panel discussion among SSB assessors.
Final assessment & results declared.
📌 Result: Recommended candidates proceed for Medical Examination.
🔹 Final Selection
Based on SSB performance + Medical fitness + Merit list.
Recommended candidates join NDA, IMA, OTA, AFA, NA, or TES courses.
