A charter school in Hephzibah, Georgia, has implemented a controversial policy of using paddling as a form of punishment for students who misbehave in the classroom, as reported by a local news channel.

The Georgia School of Innovation and the Classics (GSIC) distributed consent forms to parents, seeking permission to employ corporal punishment on their children if necessary. Superintendent Jody Boulineau mentioned to the news channel that there was a historical period where such disciplinary measures were common in schools, suggesting it was associated with fewer behavioral issues.

While GSIC does not mandate students to undergo paddling as a consequence, parents are given the choice to either consent or deny consent to this disciplinary action. Boulineau noted a range of reactions from the community, spanning from approval and acknowledgment of its reinstatement to shock and disapproval.

The details of the policy are outlined in the consent form, including a three-strike system wherein the student is taken into a private office, made to assume a certain position, and then struck on the buttocks with a wooden paddle. The form stipulates that the punishment must be witnessed by an adult and limited to three strikes. Additionally, it specifies the dimensions of the paddle to be used.

Parents who opt out of paddling must agree to a five-day suspension policy instead. Boulineau revealed that approximately one-third of the received consent forms have permitted the use of paddling.

Despite Georgia being one of the nineteen states in the U.S. where corporal punishment in schools is still permitted, Boulineau expressed belief that the policy would not be frequently utilized, suggesting that its mere existence could act as a deterrent against misbehavior.
