Описание к видео Constantin Virgil Negoita's Legacy in the World of Science

(Aired 02/09/2025) Channel NYCTV-life (WNYE) - Romanian TV of New York (RTVNY). On April 10, 2024 Hunter College of CUNY housed a memorial organized to celebrate Ctin Virgil Negoita's outstanding personality, as a scientist, professor, mentor, writer. Former colleagues, students, friends, family members gathered to honor the late Romanian American scientist’s legacy and contribution to today’s advanced scientific research in cybernetics and his literary work. Prof Negoita taught applied mathematics and cybernetics at Hunter College of CUNY until his retirement in 2009 when he was awarded the title of university Professor Emeritus. Known for his breakthrough scientific research in cybernetics and applied mathematics, CV Negoita was part of the select gallery of theoreticians of the fuzzy systems theory in cybernetics. He was one of the first world researchers to work on the concepts and theories of fuzzy sets, introduced in 1965 by LA Zadeh. His pioneer research as early as the 1970s set his scientific achievements along those of his masters, LA Zadeh and Norbert Wiener. CV Negoita was born in Romania on February 3, 1936, the son of Orthodox priest and Professor Atanasie Negoita and passed away in NY on 1/21/23. He graduated from the University of Bucharest Polytechnic Institute with a major in Electronics and Telecommunications. He obtained his PHD at his Alma Mater with his final dissertation on “Information Retrieval.” He co-authored in 1974 the first in the world monograph inspired from Zadeh’s pioneering work “Fuzzy Sets and their Applications.” Negoita became a leader of school in the newly established Economic Cybernetics Faculty in Bucharest where he organized the most renowned research group in the field of fuzzy sets; he invited to Romania the world’s top researchers. He immigrated to the US in 1982 invited by Prof Nicholas Georgescu Roegen and became a visiting scholar at Vanderbilt University TN and then a visiting professor at the University of Mexico City. He became a member of the Science Academy in NY in 1983. He is the author of 9 scientific works published between 1970 and 1987. He received the 1985 Award for New Concepts in Electrical Engineering awarded by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He continued to represent Romania at the International Academy for Systems and Cybernetic Sciences and was a member in various American scientific societies boards. Negoita was an editorial board member of several scientific journals including Economic Computation and Economic Cybernetics Studies and Research and International Journal of Advanced Intelligence Paradigms (IJAIP). Drawing from his scientific research work, Negoita was also an acclaimed writer in the Romanian American literary exile of NY. He published 12 volumes of literary prose, in English and Romanian. Several of his novels employ scientific concepts in the tradition of the postmodernist fiction, celebrate the possibility of multiple endings, and explain the relationship between apparently irreconcilable things such as the real and the imaginary. Prof Negoita kept close ties with his country of birth, supporting the scientific activity in Romania after 1989. In 2001 on his 75th birthday the Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies awarded him with the Gold Medal of Scientific Research. In 2015 he was honored as an Appointed Fellow with the International Fuzzy System Association. He received the honoris causa doctorate from the Academy of Economic Sciences Bucharest and from the University of Pitesti. He was a member of the Writers’ Union of Romania. Milestones of his vast academic research include: the publishing in 1974 together with Dan Ralescu of one of the first textbooks in Romanian on the applications of fuzzy sets, book translated into English and Japanese; his first book modeling of economic systems called Management Applications of System Theory, published in 1978 in Switzerland; in 1985 Negoita was the author of the 1st book on fuzzy systems applications to artificial intelligence systems entitled “Expert Systems and Fuzzy Systems.” The book was awarded the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Prize for New Technical Concept by the IEEE; he extended the models of the fuzzy space in the field of economics; in the early 2000, Negoita became interested in how fuzzy sets and systems fit into the framework of postmodernism in science. In collaboration with Romanian American Researcher Gabriel Burstein, he developed the fundamentals of a postmodern theory of systems and cybernetics based on Kabbalah. RTVNY participated in this symposium celebrating the late Romanian American scientist who was also one of our dedicated contributors. RTVNY interviewed him on several occasions where he spoke about the complex concepts of his lifelong research and their applications in real life.
