I joined the National Rejoin March in September 2024 where over 15 000 people marching in support for the UK to re-join the EU as Brexit has been a disaster as many remainers thought it would be. According to the OBS, the government would have an extra £40-50 billion per year to spend, or to reduce taxes. This would have meant that the cuts the government have had to make, such as cuts in Winter Fuel Payments, the tightening of Personal Independence Payments requirements and the freezing of tax thresholds would not have been needed. The sooner we can re-join, the less the damage to the economy will be, and the sooner we can recover.
Most people have now realised how stupid Brexit was and that it was a mistake, but MPs are now lagging behind the people. We need to let them know that we need to have a much closer relationship with the EU to reduce trade barriers. I think in this parliament we should re-join the single market for goods, like Northern Ireland, and to join Pan-Euro-Mediterranean convention customs union. Actually re-joining the EU is unlikely to be feasible until the two largest parties both support this. My prediction is that Labour will get us closer to the EU, but will be to timid to apply to re-join. However, is a few parliaments time, after repeatedly losing, the Conservative Party, now under the control of One Nation Conservatives, will win, maybe in about 12 - 16 years time, on the promise of applying to re-join the EU. Time will tell if my wild speculation is right.
