It is well known that in the spring, the male American toads will call for a mate. But what is not as well known, is that they cannot tell gender apart. Male toads will jump on other males, which is when the lower toad emits a distress call, often called chirping. This sound lets the other toad know he is a male and to get off, which he quickly does and backs away.
