How to install the Makah keyboard on Android. Instructions will be similar on iPhone:

Instructions:

1. Install the Keyman app for your phone: https://keyman.com/
2. Once Keyman is installed, select "Add a keyboard for your language" » "Install from Keyman.com" then search for "Makah". You should see the nrc_makah keyboard: https://keyman.com/keyboards/nrc_makah
3. Click "Install keyboard", then "Install". You can dismiss the welcome/tutorial screen by pressing "Ok".
4. Enable as a system-wide keyboard. Tap the ⋮ button in the top-right corner of the Keyman app, then "⚙ Settings". Then tap "Enable Keyman as a system-wide keyboard"
5. Enable the toggle switch for the Keyman app. It may give you a warning that Keyman is capable of seeing anything you type, such as passwords and credit card numbers*. Keyman does not store what you type, so it's okay to dismiss this message. You may also dismiss any message about not being able to use the keyboard until the phone is unlocked after a restart.
6. Open any app that requires a keyboard, like any messaging app. Tap the ⌨️ keyboard icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen. This will appear by the "back" and "home" keys. If there is no new button here, swipe down to view your notifications and there should be a banner that indicates the current keyboard your using. Tap this button or banner.
7. Under "Select Keyboard", select "Keyman"
8. That's it! You can now use the Makah keyboard in any app.


*This statement is true of ALL keyboards you have on your phone, regardless if it's downloaded from the internet like Keyman or is the default keyboard, pre-installed on your phone. It is even true of voice typing services like Google Assistant, Apple Siri, or Amazon Alexa.
