The beginning of a new year is sort of like being a painter who is approaching a blank canvas. However, the canvas of a new year is not blank, for it carries forward the history behind the present circumstances, whether personal, social, or cultural. There are many reasons why 2025 will be a year of great cosmic transition, including outer planets Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto navigating their ways into new signs while harmonizing with one another through sextiles and trines. Although January is a difficult month that includes more than its fair share of complex dynamics, frustrating setbacks, and unavoidable disappointments, the long-term prognosis is encouraging if we honor our values, act with compassion, and keep our minds open to change.
Pluto plays a powerful role in January, having already begun its twenty-year visit through conceptual Aquarius. This month’s challenges begin with a tense opposition between warrior Mars and shadowy Pluto on January 2 that can bring ongoing power struggles out into the open. This stress is likely connected to the previous Mars-Pluto opposition that perfected on November 3, just a couple of days prior to the US presidential election. Nevertheless, this transformational process won’t be complete until the third and final occurrence on April 27, 2025. Evolutionary change stays in the picture through the end of the month when karmic Saturn forms a half-square to Pluto on January 26. This is the third-and-final Saturn-Pluto semisquare in a series that most recently occurred on May 6 and September 25, 2024. The Saturn-Pluto cycle corresponds to the realignment of contested boundaries and ideologies that are, among other things, historically tied to colonial expansion and the resistance to it which we continue to see playing out around the globe.
Venus enters empathetic Pisces on January 2, encouraging us to respond to other people’s pain with compassion. Retrograde Mars steps back into nostalgic Cancer on January 6, redirecting our energy toward protection of home and homeland. Uranus remains retrograde until turning direct on January 30, suggesting that major technological and economic innovations may be impeded for several weeks. Meanwhile, Mercury gains speed throughout January, shifting into pragmatic Capricorn on January 8 and then into eclectic Aquarius on January 27. The Sun’s entry into Aquarius on January 19 marks when the Sun is farthest from its home sign of Leo. Although it’s still mid-winter in the north, the sunlight is returning, bringing hope of the looming rebirth of spring.
The Cancer Full Moon on January 13 at 2:26 pm PST is conjunct impulsive Mars, possibly stirring up a bit of trouble. The Full Moon’s sextile to unpredictable Uranus could bring a surprise or two, while its trine to fantasy-prone Neptune may add some confusion to the mix. Although imagination holds the key, committing to our dreams requires a sustainable strategy and substantial effort. The innovative Aquarius New Moon on January 29 at 4:35 am forms a flowing trine with opportunistic Jupiter. Inspiration can be found in the most unlikely places when we least expect it. Nevertheless, the current circumstances may feel overwhelming. Thankfully, it is the light of conscious intention that illuminates the path ahead. The truth is it’s up to each and every one of us to hold fast to the vision of our ideal future, even when it doesn’t match the present. Planting the seeds of hope today empowers the potential of life tomorrow. Helen Keller said, "The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision."
