Trying to influence others, especially within larger communities and organizations, can be enormously challenging. We are competing with a host of others trying to get their voices heard, their ideas adopted, their initiatives funded, and their change to stick. In his 10-year longitudinal study, including interviews with more than 2700 people, author, speaker, and consultant Ron Carucci uncovered four recurring patterns that set the most influential apart. Named as one of Harvard Business Review’s 2016 Ideas that Mattered Most, the research forms the basis of his best-selling book, Rising to Power. The data revealed that despite 89% of participants feeling like it is a privilege to having impact in their communities and organizations, only 35% felt confident they actually were having the impact they’d hoped. Exemplars in the data, however were twice as confident in having the impact they’d sought to have. The secret to their success lied in consistently displaying these four patterns of influence.
The great news is that all four patterns found among exemplars can be learned.
