Have you ever seen a cemetery that doesn’t look like a cemetery at all?
What you’re seeing in this video is not an ordinary kabristan. This is a Tower of Silence, one of the most unique and mysterious funeral systems in the world, followed by the Parsi community.
Most people across the world either cremate the dead body like Hindus or bury it like Muslims and Christians. But the Parsi funeral ritual is completely different — and deeply connected to nature, purity, and ancient belief systems.
In the Parsi community, dead bodies are neither burned nor buried. Instead, they are taken to a Tower of Silence, also known as a Dakhma, where the body is placed in an open circular structure under the sky. Over time, vultures, eagles, and other scavenger birds consume the body. This process might sound shocking to many, but for Parsis, it is a sacred and respectful return of the body to nature.
So why do Parsis follow this tradition?
According to Zoroastrian beliefs, the elements — earth (mitti), water (paani), fire (aag), and air (hawa) — are considered pure and sacred. A dead body is believed to be impure, and burning or burying it would pollute these natural elements. That’s why the body is left in the open, allowing nature itself to complete the cycle of life.
This tradition reflects a powerful philosophy:
👉 Hum nature se aaye hain, aur nature mein hi wapas jaate hain.
The Tower of Silence in Mumbai is one of the most famous examples of this ritual in India. Hidden away from public view, these structures have existed for centuries and are an important part of Parsi history and culture. Many people living in Mumbai don’t even know such a place exists in their own city.
Over time, due to environmental changes and the decline in vulture populations, the Parsi community has also adapted their practices while still respecting their religious principles. This shows how ancient traditions evolve but never lose their core values.
This video is not meant to shock or offend anyone. It is created to educate, inform, and respectfully explain one of the world’s most misunderstood funeral traditions. The Parsi death ritual teaches us that there are many ways cultures understand life, death, and respect for nature.
