Dan and Ashley discover that their home is haunted by the ghost of Liz, Dan’s former girlfriend. Liz becomes determined to scare Ashley out of her relationship with Dan with a series of supernatural pranks. Ashley’s resolve will be tested as she must find a way to make peace with Liz before one of her pranks goes too far.

Director Biography - Thomas Jiang

In America, Thomas pursued filmmaking as his dream profession, and in 2019, he made the move to Los Angeles in search of opportunities and graduated with a Master’s degree in Film and Television Production at Loyola Marymount University.

His passion for film began when he was very young. His father always liked to watch American films in their original language and would rarely watch dubbed versions, so he ended up also watching them in English despite not knowing a word of English at the time as a young Chinese. As a result, he learned English primarily through movies and television after moving to Canada at 6 years old. His passion for film also helped him develop other skills, such as drawing and sculpting. As a kid, he was heavily influenced by classic science fiction and action films and would spend much of his free time just drawing images and characters from films. He would even buy clay and would spend a lot of time sculpting various characters and monsters from films, whether it would be Godzilla, the Alien, or the shark from Jaws. As a filmmaker, Thomas has always aimed to provide viewers with engaging and immersive films that will hopefully challenge them and take them on an emotional journey, as well as some escapism.

Director Statement

As artists, we should always strive to challenge ourselves through our work because it is the only way in which we can improve our craft. Unrest In Peace is a film that challenges me to explore a different genre in terms of filmmaking. The film is about a young couple who just moved in together and must deal with the ghostly presence of the boyfriend’s deceased former girlfriend who now haunts their home. Thematically, this film is ultimately about reconciliation as the primary characters must work out their differences and learn to get along in order to form this unusual trio of roommates by the end. The film is also about communication and learning to stand up for oneself when needed.

As stated, I wanted to challenge myself with a genre that I was less comfortable with as comedic timing was something that I’ve struggled with as a filmmaker. I’ve included some darker humor and elements as my way of easing myself into comedy, as I am more comfortable with darker material. I drew primary influences from What We Do In the Shadows and Arrested Development. I wanted to make a lighthearted comedy with some darker supernatural elements as well as some of the more quirky and quick-witted humor from Arrested Development. Both titles tend to match my style of humor and share the mockumentary style and aesthetic, which I wanted to incorporate into my film as I thought that it would be an effective way in making the viewers feel more in the moment and present within the space of the set. I aimed to give the film a positive message as I also felt that I've been seeing more films with nihilistic messages these days, so the theme of reconciliation and self-assertion was inherently appealing to me.
