Sometimes, headrests are a kind of headache while making the cover. If the manufacturing of the cover turns out good, then the issue comes at fitting time. I want to share with my interested users a simple way to make a headrest cover that would make the fitting process easier.
As we can see, everything starts from tracing over the foam base and get the mold. As I already taught in previous videos this time I am using the practical method of molding directly on the foam base by using the same 'stretchy vinyl' I am going to work with. In part Two, I will show the 'academic method' of getting molds by using cardstock.
Worthwile to mention that to get molds from flat surfaces are not a big deal. The problem is when we need to get them from 'bulky surfaces'. Both techniques are taught in our basic courses.
There are related youtube free videos that would help to widen your understanding about headrests.
If really interested in learning car upholstery watch carefully the video and you yourself will discover the whys and wherefores. If any doubt or question, please, feel free to ask.
Some clues to consider:
1. Take advantage of stretchy side of vinyl over the headrest foam (main panel and side panels).
2. Several reference V notches all around.
3. To avoid tearing of vinyl it is advisable to reinforce the 'sewing ends'. I have used celestra cloth for this purpose. It helps at fitting time to avoid tearing of vinyl in these junctions.
4. A first sewing should be done all along the edge of the seams
5. The second sewing is done at 1 cm distance from the edge.
6. The sewn seam flaps should fold to the inside to make the fitting easier.
7. Velcro is a good option to attach the lower headrest area. The vinyl should be first carefully pulled to the bottom making a gentle attaching of velcro strips.
I hope you find some inspiration in this video to tackle your own upholstery projects!
