This course examines the essential literary and philosophical elements of The Fountainhead, including its plot, characterizations, theme and, briefly, Ayn Rand's writing style. Specific topics analyzed include but are not limited to: the innovator versus tradition; conformity and nonconformity versus individualism; independence versus dependence; selfishness versus selflessness; and the story's five main characters: Howard Roark, Dominique Francon, Gail Wynand, Peter Keating and Ellsworth Toohey.

Andrew Bernstein holds a PhD in philosophy from the Graduate School of the City University of New York. He is the author of The Capitalist Manifesto: The Historic, Economic, and Philosophic Case for Laissez-Faire—and of CliffsNotes for three Ayn Rand titles: Anthem, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged. He has published critical essays on Ayn Rand's We the Living, Anthem and The Fountainhead in scholarly collections—and has also published op-ed essays in such major newspapers as the San Francisco Chronicle, Chicago Tribune, Washington Times, Baltimore Sun, Los Angeles Daily News, the Houston Chronicle and many others.

He has taught Ayn Rand's novels and philosophy to classes at SUNY Purchase, Pace University, Marist College, C.W. Post Center of Long Island University, Marymount College and many other New York-area schools. He has taught Philosophy of Objectivism at the New School for Social Research in New York City—and lectured on Ayn Rand's books and philosophy at universities across the country, including Harvard, Columbia, Yale, NYU, University of Chicago, Northwestern, University of California (Berkeley), Stanford, UCLA
