There’s been people asking for stepper based drives, so here’s one of them!

If you’ve used a vintage Mac there’s a good chance you heard one of those. And hearing it you would, this drive’s seeking is very loud (which is great!). It’s also very easy to hear when something is wrong with the drive’s initialization or seeking.

This example here looks quite corroded, but has 1 bad sector. The stepper motor is being a little annoying though, I don’t know if I ever managed to actually put oil in it or I just smeared it all on the plastic, but the tiny bottle of oil I have is now empty and I messed with it for quite a while to get the drive to initialize and seek properly. I’ll have to buy some oil soon and make sure it actually goes in next time I guess.
These drives are one of the few that have an option for auto-parking, although this one is much simpler than Seagate’s sophisticated option: After 30 seconds of inactivity the drive seeks the heads to the landing zone. If you want, you can even disable this behavior, it’s being controlled by a jumper on the PCB.
