Russia’s Environmental Disaster: Oil Spill and Tanker Leak Threatens Black Sea

Hundreds of volunteers and emergency workers are battling to clean up a devastating oil spill along the coastline of Russia’s southern Krasnodar region.

The incident occurred after two Russian ships, the Volgoneft 239 and the Volgoneft 212, leaked approximately 3,700 tons of mazut, a heavy fuel oil, into the Kerch Strait after being badly damaged during stormy weather.

Local authorities have declared a state of emergency as 35 km of coastline is now polluted.

Experts report that oil continues to leak from one of the ships, raising concerns about further contamination.

The Kerch Strait separates Russian-occupied Crimea from the Russian mainland and has been a key point of conflict with Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the incident, stating the ships “shouldn’t have been in operation at all”.

The scale of the damage to the environment and marine life remains unclear as cleanup operations and assessments continue.
