D.A. SAYS GUILTY VERDICT IN MURRAY CASE SENDS STRONG MESSAGE
Fans of the late pop star Michael Jackson cheered and hugged each other outside a Los Angeles court house on Monday as a jury inside found the singer's doctor guilty of involuntary manslaughter.
The verdict came after a trial that painted Dr. Conrad Murray as a reckless caregiver who administered a lethal dose of a powerful anaesthetic that killed the pop star.
"We're gratified the jury saw the overwhelming evidence in this case led to just one conclusion, that Dr. Murray is guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Michael Jackson," said Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley at a news conference after the verdict came through.
Murray's conviction marked the latest chapter in one of pop culture's most shocking tragedies - the death of the King of Pop on the eve of the singer's heavily promoted comeback concerts.
Murray sat stone-faced during the verdict and was handcuffed and taken into custody without bail until sentencing on 29 November.
He appeared calm as officials led him out of the courtroom.
Cooley said the verdict was "a very strong and powerful message that this sort of conduct does rise to the level of criminal negligence and to the extent someone dies as a result of them playing the role as 'Doctor Feelgood', they will be held accountable".
The 58-year Murray faces a sentence of up to four years in prison.
He could also lose his medical license.
Murray's attorneys left the courtroom without commenting.
