Are hunting Tartans meant to be camouflage? Can a "hunting Tartan" really be you know a tartan for hunting?

Were any of the traditional tartans or military tartans ever meant to be used as camouflage?
What tartans made today could possibly serve as camouflage? Like for deer hunting?

If you’re not an outdoorsman, this may seem like an odd question, but we DO know many men who are both full time wearers of the kilt and avid hunters, so we were not surprised someone was considering a hunting kilt.

Did the Highlanders use tartan for camouflage? Possibly. But it may have been a happy side benefit of the local natural dyes they had available.

George Buchanan’s ‘Rerum Scoticam Historia’, published in 1581, contains the following description of what seems to be a belted plaid (great kilt):

“Their ancestors wore plaids of many colors, and numbers still retain this custom but the majority now in their dress prefer a dark brown, imitating nearly the leaves of the heather, that when lying upon the heath in the day, they may not be discovered by the appearance of their clothes; in these wrapped rather than covered, they brave the severest storms in the open air, and sometimes lay themselves down to sleep even in the midst of snow.”

However, what we call Hunting Tartans have a completely different and pretty much non-utilitarian origin.

The lads discuss some current tartans they feel might work as natural camo, or at least as a nice sedate option for being in the woods.
