On the eve of the U.S. presidential inauguration, President-elect Joe Biden attended a memorial service in Washington D.C. to honor the lives lost to the COVID-19 pandemic.
And with only hours remaining, the transition of power is set to begin unlike any other inauguration in U.S. history,... due to the pandemic and unprecedented levels of security.
Choi Min-jung reports.
On the eve of the U.S. presidential inauguration, President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris arrived at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C.,… to honor the victims of COVID-19.
The Memorial's reflecting pool was lit up with 400 illuminating lights,… to commemorate the 400-thousand lives lost to the pandemic.
Biden delivered remarks from in front of the pool to pay tribute and share his grief.
"To heal, we must remember. It's hard sometimes to remember, but that's how we heal. It's important to do that as a nation. That's why we're here today. Between sundown and dusk let us shine the lights in the darkness along the sacred pool of reflection, remember all whom we lost."
Biden and Harris are less than 24 hours away from being sworn in as the 46th president and vice-president of the United States.
While staying true to some well-established traditions, the transition of power will also see major changes from previous inaugurations due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The National Mall will be closed to the public, and the traditional parade,... which normally takes place on the streets of Washington, will be replaced with a virtual one called the "Parade Across America".
The new leaders will also feature in a live 90-minute program hosted by the actor, Tom Hanks,... which will include performances by top celebrities.
Following the recent attack on the Capitol Building, 25-thousand National Guard troops have been placed in central Washington to prepare against any possible security threats on the big day.
Also, experts say the handover of the "nuclear football", a briefcase that allows the president to authorize nuclear attacks,... will be different this year,... as Trump does not plan on attending Wednesday's ceremony.
