During Japan’s surrender ceremony aboard USS Missouri, two ordinary U.S. flags were flown on the ship. Despite popular stories, neither flag had any special history—they had not flown over the White House, Pearl Harbor, or anywhere else significant. Captain Stuart Murray later explained that they were simply standard Navy-issued flags taken from spare supplies and were clean and unused.
The only historically important flag present was a 31-star U.S. flag that had been flown by Commodore Matthew Perry in 1853–1854, when he entered Tokyo Bay to force Japan to open its ports to foreign trade. This flag was brought from the U.S. Naval Academy Museum and displayed near the surrender area.
In photographs, the flag appears backward, with the stars in the upper right corner. This was intentional and correct, as U.S. flags displayed on the right side are shown this way to appear as if they are moving forward into battle. The flag’s fabric was extremely fragile, so a protective backing was sewn on, which made its reverse side visible.
Today, a replica of this flag is displayed on the Surrender Deck of the Battleship Missouri Memorial at Pearl Harbor. The original flag, along with the surrender table, tablecloth, and bronze plaque, is preserved at the Naval Academy Museum.
