The Partition of India was one of the largest and most painful mass migrations in human history.
As the Independence of India approached, British India was divided into two new nations—India and Pakistan—largely based on religious identity.
Hastily drawn borders split provinces, villages, and families overnight. Fear and uncertainty quickly turned into violence as millions fled across newly created frontiers. Nearly fifteen million people were displaced, and more than a million lost their lives in one of history’s most traumatic human tragedies.
Amid the chaos, there were also countless acts of courage, sacrifice, and compassion, as ordinary people helped strangers survive. The Partition ended colonial rule—but left deep scars that continue to shape identities, borders, and memories across South Asia to this day.
